This resource uses A3 Debate Worksheets to foster discussions about learning and metacognition amongst small groups of students. The intention is that students are in groups of 3-5 and that the debate worksheets circulate around the room, with groups rotating the worksheets every five minutes, so that different groups can discuss them and add ideas.
It covers five topics, each contains eleven debate worksheets. Each topic comprises a learning session, though the resources can be used as shorter learning activities. The five topics discussed are:

The Philosophy Boxes Method is a new approach to P4C designed for students in KS1, 2 & 3: it is graphically stimulating, engaging, and fun. This download is also suitable for older students: but the format was designed with younger students in mind.
The topic of this Philosophy Boxes download is ‘Space, Space Exploration, Aliens & The Universe’.
The download comprises a P4C lesson/session that can be used 2-3 times with the same group.
The aim of Philosophy Boxes is to bring philosophy and critical thinking into every subject at every level: we believe that any subject becomes philosophy when students are asked the right questions and when they think about a topic hard enough and on the deepest (most fundamental) level.
The Philosophy Boxes Method presents students with a set of ‘mystery boxes’, when a student selects one of the boxes they are presented with 1 of 21 discussion/debate activities [that use 1 of 8 different formats].
The presentation has integrated AfL so that teachers can test knowledge at any point in the lesson. There are 10 different AfL slides to choose from.
The design is colourful, animated, fun and engaging: all activities require movement and teachers can decide whether students are expressing their ideas purely verbally or by using post-it notes.
The nature of the design is that it can be used for short sessions (5-10 minutes) or much longer sessions (up to 2 hours!) - it allows for classroom practitioners to be flexible and adaptable. It can, therefore, be used in lessons or as a tutor-time activity.

The revision sessions feature:
-A ‘grid of learning’ post-it task (to focus students on the day’s topic and refresh their memories of the basics)
-A 'competitive mind-mapping task (which can be completed on the whiteboard or on A3 paper)
-A silent debate task (with 6 x A3 silent debate worksheets in an editable .doc file) [nb. allowing group conversation, instead of silence, is also an effective approach]
-Debates that ask students to move from one side of the room or the other and verbalise a defence of their position in response to a statement or rubric.

These easy to use resources are perfect for Continued Professional Development (CPD) and are designed for in-house training, inset days and general teacher education. As with our other resources, the training materials are aimed at teaching professionals working with students aged 11-16 though they are also useful for those teaching students in further education.

Each session is designed to last for at least 2 hours: we wanted to include more than enough for 2 hour teacher training sessions so that those delivering the lessons can ‘cut their cloth accordingly’ and adapt resources and timings according to their will. Ideally you should assign different teachers to deliver the different sessions so as to make the training more immersive, interactive, and varied.
Each session includes a session-plan (akin to a lesson-plan) which provides a rough guide to timings and activities for the session leader. We advise delivering the sessions in the order presented above.

This metacognition teaching resource serves two primary functions:
To teach students how to use the metacognitive cycle (planning, monitoring, evaluating and regulating) in relation to essay-writing: developing essay-writing skills
To use essay-writing tasks as a way to encourage metacognitive reflection and help students gain metacognitive knowledge: developing metacognitive and self-regulated learning skills
The download includes an interactive PowerPoint presentation that can be used for multiple (x12) one-hour learning sessions as well as an accompanying information sheet about using metacognitive strategies for essay writing.
The learning sessions guide students through the essay writing process and dedicate time to planning, monitoring, evaluating and regulating the essay writing process. Twelve metacognitive/ self-regulated learning reflection topic options are provided with hints as to what students might want to include in their essays. The topics are:

Essay topics 1-6 are subject-specific and can be used by teachers of any subject to foster metacognition and lead students towards metacognitive knowledge their particular school subject whilst essay topics 6-12 are general metacognitive reflection rubrics.
Aside from metacognition and self-regulated learning, we hope to work with educators towards building greater levels of learner autonomy in students: to this end the essay-writing session instructions also guide students towards developing their own assessment criteria that they (at the end of each session) will use to evaluate their own work. This approach ties in neatly with the ‘planning’ stage of the metacognitive cycle and helps students to consider the task requirements before engaging with it.
